Prof Adamson Muula

Center Director

Adamson S. Muula is a professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Malawi. He trained as a medical doctor at the Flinders University of South Australia (Adelaide- Australia) and the College of Medicine-University of Malawi. He has postgraduate qualifications in Palliative Care from Makerere University (Uganda), a Master of Public Health from Loma Linda University (California) and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (United States). Professor Muula is board certified in Public Health by the (American) National Board of Public Health Examiners. He has supervised over 40 masters’ theses and six PhD dissertations. Dr Fanuel Lampiao

Deputy director

Fanuel Lampiao is the first Deputy Director of ACEPHEM. He is an Associate Professor of Medical Physiology at the College of Medicine, University of Malawi. He is currently the Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Malawi, Chancellor College and proceeded to the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) where he obtained a BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, and PG Dip Bioethics. His research interests are in the understanding of male infertility, and herbal medicines that have an effect on the reproductive function in males and females.

Besides his contribution to the dissemination of research findings, he has successfully supervised various postgraduate students, acted as examiner and moderator to a number of national and international universities, serves on the editorial board of leading publications and regularly performs reviews for international funding agencies and journals.

John Mponda 

Deputy Director

John Mponda is a Second Deputy Center Director for the University of Malawi, College of Medicine, Africa Centre of Excellence in Public Health and Herbal Medicine (ACEPHEM). He is an experienced Pharmacist and Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy. He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) from University of Malawi, College of medicine (2006). He holds a Master of Science of Pharmacognosy, a Science of natural product chemistry and traditional medicines obtained at Taipei Medical University, Taiwan (2012). He is a researcher for the Impact on Malaria, Maternal health and the Prognosis for Aids by Quality Assurance, Knowledge exchange and Training (IMMPAQKT), College of Medicine-Strathclyde University Project. He is the Board of Trustee for the Central Medical Stores Trust an institution responsible for Procuring, Storage and Distribution of medicines to public health facilities. He is also the Vice President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi.
John’s research interests include: Traditional medicines: Herbal Policy and education, Quality control, Value addition (Dosing, labeling and packaging) and phytochemical analysis with a focus on HIV, Malaria, TB and cancer. Pharmacovigilance (Rational use of medicines/herbs, Detecting and reporting ADRs, Counterfeit medicines/herbs and Detecting medical errors and drug interactions, herbal-drug interactions)

Limbanazo Matandika

Programme Manager

Limbanazo Matandika is the Programme Manager of Africa Center in Public Health and Herbal Medicine (ACEPHEM). She oversees the implementation of project milestones. She works with ACEPHEM Leadership in organizing and coordinating the center’s activities to achieve the center’s defined objectives. Ms Limbanazo is a member of the management team.

She has 4 years’ work experience in research governance and management having worked with two vibrant research institutions (Malawi Liverpool Welcome Trust and University of North Carolina in Lilongwe) in Malawi conducting bio-Medical Research in areas of HIV, TB, Malaria, Vaccines and Non-communicable diseases . A holder of the University of Malawi, College of Medicine Master in Public Health, Limbanazo went to advance her skills in Social Sciences with the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa where she graduated with a Master of Social Science in Health Research Ethics.

Towera Gondwe

Programmes Assistant

Towera Gondwe works as ACEPHEM Programmes Assistant.  Towera is key in coordinating day to day operations of ACEPHEM and acts as a bridge between administrative and secretarial staff. She helps in facilitating and coordinating the center’s activities, assists in preparation and record keeping of relevant documentation of the program and maintaining visibility of the center’s activities. She comes with six years’ experience in different roles such as customer service and administrative support. Towera holds an ACCA accounting diploma.
