Professor Gail D. Hughes

Gail Hughes is a Professor at University of Western Cape Faculty of Sciences  Department of Medical Biosciences; adjunct Professor at University of Missouri-Columbia, School of Health Professions, and guest lecturer at Stellenbosch University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She held the position of Director of South African Herbal Science and Medicine Institute from 2011-2015.

She has both masters and doctorate in epidemiology from University of California-Berkeley (USA). Professor Hughes is the founding chair of Public Health Association of South Africa(PHASA) Speciality Interest Group-Integrative Complementary and Traditional Health Practices; and section Councillor for American Public Health Association(APHA) Integrative, Complementary and Traditional Health Practices. She is NRF rated scientist and was twice awarded South African Medical Research Council Distinguished Scientist.

Her research interests are: Medical pluralism–utilization of integrative medicine by resource constrained communities for non- communicable diseases; and traditional herbal medicine/complementary and alternative medicine for chronic diseases and conditions.
