Dr Mwapatsa Mipando

Dr MIPANDO is the Principal of the College of Medicine, University of Malawi. An academic administrator, he has previously been Vice Principal, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Head of Physiology Department and Dean of Students.  He has collaborated nationally and internationally in research and programmes aimed at building health workforce, academic and research leadership capacity.  Dr Mipando has also contributed to several advisory boards such as the United States Government funded Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI), the Sub-Saharan Africa Medical School Study (SAMSS) and the WHO Expert group on developing Guidelines for Health Profession’s Training.

Mwapatsa earned his Bachelor of Education- Science (Biology) from the University of Malawi before being awarded an MSc-Physiology from the University of Liverpool. Thereafter he studied at the University of KwaZulu Natal (PhD-Physiology).  He research interests are in non-communicable diseases with a focus on the usage of traditional medicine in cardiovascular diseases and well as in Medical Education.  He is currently leading the establishment of centre of excellence in non-communicable diseases with funding from US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Scottish government.
