CALL FOR WORKSHOP APPLICATIONS

The University of Dundee, Wellcome Centre of Anti-Infectives Research in collaboration with the  African Centre of Excellence in Public Health and Herbal Medicine (ACEPHEM) of the University of Malawi will be conducting the following workshops:

  1. Biology assays (Max of 10 people)

 

Duration: Monday 28th October from 1PM to Friday 1st November

 

Topics: From Design to Completion,  selection of assay; design of experiment; use of controls;  assay optimisation;  practical techniques; assay readout; data analysis; data interpretation.

Who should apply: Postgraduate students currently enrolled and those planning to apply for postgraduate studies, junior faculty in institutions of higher learning, laboratory personnel andd anyone who would like to advance their knowledge in biological assays.

  1. Chemistry (Max of 16 people)

 

Week 1 13:00  Monday 28th October – 16:00 Friday 1st November

Week 2 09:00 Monday 4th November – 16:00 Thursday 7th November 

Topics: Thin layer chromatography (TLC) theory and application; Normal phase chromatography theory and application; Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry data analysis; NMR theory and data analysis.

This workshop will mainly be focusing on practical skills but there will be some elements of taught sessions included.

Who should apply: Postgraduate students currently enrolled and those planning to apply for postgraduate studies, junior faculty in institutions of higher learning, laboratory personnel andd anyone who would like to advance their knowledge in drug characterisation.

  1. Analytical Chemistry (max of 6 people)

 

Week 1 13:00 Monday 28th October – 16:00 Wednesday 30th October

Week 2 09:00 Monday 4th November – 16:00 Tuesday 5th November

 

Topics: Liquid Chromatography

  • How does the LC system work
  • Running of compounds and interpreting results
  • Analysis of natural product samples
  • Manual preparative HPLC

Who should apply: Postgraduate students currently enrolled and those planning to apply for postgraduate studies, junior faculty in institutions of higher learning, laboratory personnel andd anyone who would like to advance their knowledge in liquid chromatography.

Please note that you will have to choose one group and stick with it as we have designed the teaching to be stand-alone.

Workshop fee: USD100 per participant. Course fees cover course material, and lunch.  There are limited scholarships to cover the workshop fees of participants. These will be awarded on merit.
